Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an all-only daughter by her grandmother. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. After the completion of her studies, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Along with two part-time jobs, Scott was also a teacher at Temple University. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. The dream, however ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. Being a poet She began to sing at live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me was co-written by the two. She was first outed as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Additionally, she gained experience as performers in The Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was the first signed artist to the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
